  2. Hi,

Perfect tutorial. It was of great help.

Here I want to complete something that can enrich your tutorial and help many others who have purchased the Foscam.

If the above commands do not work (/etc/init.d/S80network e ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255) and you have updated the firmware through wireless, try the following steps:

Important: When an error occurs usually in firmware upgrade, the operating system starts the camera usually because the Linux kernel is not in the firmware. In some firmware is only executable files that were overlapping and not others. The step- by-step down will be able to recover your camera via serial, even if she did not give any signal after firmware upgrade.

    Follow the step-by-step:

Download the current camera firmware in: http://foscam.us/downloads/?MA and soon after downloading, open it with Winrar (http://www.win-rar.com), the “.bin” is a compressed file :-).

Now you must connect the network cable and try to start with the command (/etc/init.d/S80network e ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255) the camera communication with your computer. This will be useful to transfer files from your PC to the camera via “wget”. Example: wget http://192.168.0.1/CGIProxy.fcgi, when you are in the folder that contains the file. Recalling the idea is to override the files, thereby restoring the original firmware.

But to use wget, install on your PC a web server, you can download Ngnix and run it without installing, extremely simple, via the link: http://nginx.org/download/nginx-1.5.6.zip

Now do an ls -l in all directories and compare with the current firmware files. If different overlaps (calm, not so many files) with the same firmware. If all goes well, within about 45 minutes you will have your camera back.

After that just restart the camera.

Note: You can also transfer files via serial , but I was not successful in doing so.

    Good luck.

    • Hi Nilson,
After updating my FI9821W camera, to 1.1.1.14 firmvare from 1.1.1.13, it is invizible on LAN. The green LED located above the red one (power on) does not torn on at all.
I tried to connect camera, with a verified serial port as Geir recomend (picture), but the camera does not react in any way, even when connecting the power suply no text appear.
Many times I have checked cable connection.
      Any ideas ?

      Best Regards Calin

  3. Hi Nilson,
Thanks for your post. My FI9821 is bricked after updated firmware too. Can you please specify a bit more about your solution such as step by step. I try to follow but unsuccessful. I already configured static IP address before update new firmware.
    Thanks.

  4. my Foscam FI9821W do not look like this. my motherboard in my Foscam FI9821W are Square not round how to use a TTL interface on this.

  5. My Foscam F19802W is bricked after succesful firmare update 1.4.1.13. My fixed IP address is not reachable and my network detector does not see any other address: wired or wifi.
So I should like to unbrick with the guidance above, but also a square board without a clue where to connect.I have 4 holes marked J0701, but no indication for the wires.
Do you have an advice on how to proceed?

  6. I have a fi9821w v2 and the board doesnt look anything like it, I’m not sure where I must do the soldering

  7. Thanks for the information. When applying the same update, my FI9821W “bricked” also… Even though the update process was apparently successful. I want to try the serial connection, but how did you manage to solder the wires? The PCB conductors are so small!

  8. I followed the instructions on this page, and now I can see the camera on my local network (ip address pings, and can see mac address of camera) However, the web interface will not open. Is there a way to update the firmware over the serial connection?

    Thanks

    PW

    • Peter, any chance you could send those instructions over my way? I’m in the same boat as the others as well. The instructions posted on the blog allow me ping my device, however they do not let me access the web server portion :(.

@Geir, thanks for getting me this far, the USB TTL connection is working great, it’s been forever since I’ve brushed off my linux hat 🙂

      • Sorry, for the delayed response regarding you question.
I have learned that the FI9821 “MK1” camera can fail in several ways during firmware upgrade.
In my case, method showed on this site worked for my camera.
However, there is another method that may work for your case. However, this method is not developed by me, so I will only point you to the location of some information that may help you on your way.
Look at this site (use google translate or something similar to translate it) http://radiotech.kz/threads/foscam-fi9821w-postojanno-perezagruzhaetsja-rebooting-in-loop.109/
You may find the information you need to restore your camera. I have restored one camera, owned by a friend by this method, and it worked fine.
        Best Regards,

  9. For those wishing to update the firmware of a semi-bricked FI9821W via the serial port – if ethernet wire/wifi is not working – Foscam technical support (tech@foscam.com) can send out full instructions (plus serial connection tools) to do the job. I just did it successfully, and have my camera back to full working condition.

  10. Hi,
I also got my foscam bricked. Can you email thé instructions you got from support ?
    Thanks for tour help.

  11. hi. I have a same problem with FI9821W v.2, what I can make ? Possible bypass this problem and upgrade with firmware for FI9821W v.2.1 ?

  12. I have connected to my bricked FI9821W v1 using the USB-Serial cable and via Putty – The screen scrolls with unrecognisable characters, but responds to me pressing the ESC key during boot up. I’ve checked the cable connections multiple times but still no success.

    Any ideas?

The camera when powered on spins around as it did before it was bricked, so it’s not completely dead..
